Transportation

One of Ocala/Marion County’s most important features is its close proximity to the major metropolitan areas of Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa, which are all located less than a two-hour drive from Ocala.  Miami and Atlanta are within a six-hour drive.

Highways

Ocala is located along Interstate 75 and federal highways 301,441, and 27 which provide immediate access to most of Florida or to the interstate system.

Rail Service

Ocala and Marion County enjoy a strong rail network with direct rail access available in many of the business parks.  Class I carrier CSX Transportation brings extensive resources and long haul reach to enable customers to enjoy rail’s superior freight economics.  Short line carrier Florida Northern Railroad works closely with CSX to offer value added services to smaller customers or those with a need for more switching services.  The Florida Northern Railroad also offers a variety of transload services to bring the advantages of rail to non-rail served customers.

Bus Service

Marion County’s population is currently served by a comprehensive transportation system. Within the urban area, SunTran operates fixed public transit routes serving both industrial and residential service areas.

Local Air Service

The Ocala International Airport is located six miles west of downtown Ocala and serves the growing corporate and industrial needs for the area.  Situated on over 1,500 acres, its two runways handle over 115,000 annual operations, with planes as large as B-727, B-737, BBJ and DC-8s . Anything with a weight limit of over "220,000 lbs dual tandem wheel" must receive permission from airport management prior to landing. Ocala International Airport is also the designation for US Foreign Trade Zone #217.

The Dunnellon Airport is located in the southwest corner of Marion County. It has a total area of approximately 800 acres, divided into an airport and an industrial park. The airport has two runways both with pilot controlled medium intensity lighting. The airport currently has 48 T-hangars in addition to several corporate hangars.

Commercial Air Service

Within a two-hour drive of Marion County, there is an international airport in each of the following cities: Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa. Gainesville Regional Airport offers connection flights, while Ocala International Airport at Taylor Field provides private, charter and air cargo services.
